In Depth: 60 essential tools every web designer and developer

A WAMP package will enable you to run an Apache server and sites built using MySQL and PHP on Windows PCs. Similar solutions exist for Mac and Linux (MAMP and LAMP, respectively). A popular distribution is XAMPP, although for Macs, MAMP is a good bet. Having a nightmare getting a test server set up. Tried WAMP2 : looks great, however has wrong PHP and MYSQL version (not compatible with Drupal6) and it appears that you can't downgrade the MYSQL version : have been trying. By the way, where did you get the information about the required MySQL version? I have never experienced compatibility problems with MySQL and http://drupal.org/requirements just says "Drupal 6 supports MySQL 4.1 or higher".

Getting up and running with turnkey Drupal 6 with Ubuntu 9.10

Where I can logon by using root and no pw. But then I am given another logon root@drupal6 where I am stuck. I am assuming drupal was already installed and stuff and I can get right to the website stuff. The ampp letters within xampp stand for apache, mysql, php, and pearl. Together they comprise my web server on my local machine for testing web applications. The path to my htdocs, document root, folder in fedora with xampp is /opt/lampp/htdocs.
