Witchcraft claim leads to deadly soccer riot

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Witchcraft claim leads to deadly soccer riot: “A riot broke out at a soccer match in the Congo yesterday, apparently after one of the players was accused of using witchcraft. Thirteen people were killed, most of whom were teenagers. From the Associated Press:

Radio Okapi said police tried to control the violence at Matokeo stadium by firing into the air to protect their commander, who was hit in the head and wounded by fans.

The two local clubs involved were Socozaki and Nyuki System, the radio said.

Dozens of teenagers marched through Butembo’s dirt streets Monday in protest, and the regional governor, Julien Mpaluku, paid a visit to the hospital.

Flickr pool of photos taken through viewfinders of old cameras: “200809181255.jpg

Cpt. Tim reports on this fun Flickr pool called Through the Viewfinder.

You basically make cool retro or vintage looking pictures by taking a picture through the viewfinder of an old top-down viewfinder camera, like a Duaflex.

The Flickr group with wonderful submissions and instructions on how to do it is here, and here is what I’ve been able to do after ordering an old camera on eBay.

Touching tale of heartbreak promotes Lenovo S10, rends our hearts in twain: “

Filed under:

While we’ve been dealing with short-form ad fare in the States, China’s gone all artsy on us, with Lenovo releasing a short film to promote its S9 / S10 netbook. We won’t ruin the plot for you — the dialogue is all in Chinese, so it’s not like we could — but suffice it to say that the Lenovo S10 and unrequited love play major roles.

[Thanks, Patrick]

Zune updates, more than just capacity?: “

For those of you concerned that Microsoft’s seemingly imminent updates to the Zune will be limited to some glossy plastic and capacity bumps, lean in, we’ve got good news. Matt Rosoff over at cnet news offers this tease:

‘I can’t say much, but I’ve seen what Microsoft’s planning, and befitting its status as a software plus services company, the real advances aren’t going to be in the Zune hardware, but in the Zune software and associated services.’

Sooner, rather than later though Microsoft, your target isn’t standing still.
